Last year was the year of revelations; this year - confirmations...
8 months ago I decided to press the “launch” button - to start a “Mel’s Gym”. If any of you know me I’m a huge Mike Burgener fan. Coach B. has a love and passion for weightlifting and people. He is a Level 5 Senior International Weightlifting coach, a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specailist, and was named “Coach of the Year” for The United States Weightlifting. Coach B is 71. In 1985 Coach B turned his 600 square foot garage into one of the most legendary gyms I’m aware of! His athletes range from 82 “geezers”, to CrossFit Games athletes, to USA Weightlifting athletes, to anyone who steps foot into his garage - regardless of age or ability. His California garage is the home of "Mikes Gym".
On August 4th, 2017, I met Coach B at the CrossFit Games in Madison, WI. Not knowing me from Adam, he shakes my hand and says, “You look like someone who likes things ‘just so’."
Wodapalooza Miami 2017, I was feeling sorry for myself. Stuck in a rut; and struggling with ethical decisions around my place of employment of the time. While volunteering at the athlete tent the day before competition, I ran into Duke Van Vleet - former Cirque du Soleil performing artist, owner of CrossFit Rising Wave, and gymnastics coach at i99 Fit. He gave me TWO of the best pieces of advice ever: 1) find YOUR niche, and 2) know your WORTH... Your niche, that thing that makes you special, different from those around you, will set you apart. Being “good” at THAT thing “you're good at” (doing the common uncommonly well), will set your value. Your value to others sets your worth.
Wodapalooza Miami 2018, I met up with Duke again; all could say was, “Thank you!” He had planted a seed - I found my niche, and I KNOW my worth.
One more: Carl Paoli - elite gymnast, action sports enthusiast, entrepreneur, author of the book "Freestyle", Coach, public speaker, as well as a board member of The CrossFit Trainer Certification board. In the spring of 2017, I talked one of my bff’s into going to one of Carl’s seminars. When Bekah and I walked in Carl walked over to great us. As we talked, he stated, “I feel like we know each other...” No, we had never met, but as the seminar commenced the confirmations continued; I was there as a student yes, but by the end of the day I was also there as a colleague.
Part 1: This is a this very small insight - an insight into a dream that has had MANY, MANY, MANY more influential elements then the ones listed above! This is my journey yes; but because of you, YOU are a part of this journey as well, and I can't wait to keep sharing!!
